Messi: I've Never Played England, It Will Be Special

Lionel Messi has one career void he's now set to fill. The Argentina captain has never faced England, a gap that will close when the two nations clash in the semifinals of the North American World Cup. The last encounter between England and Argentina was a friendly in November 2005. Messi was already part of the national squad then but watched from the stands due to a suspension.

“Matches against big national teams are always special. I’ve never played against England before, so it will be a unique game. This is a World Cup semifinal. Now we’ll rest and start preparing for it. We put in a tremendous effort to go through extra time twice and another match, and that shows something,” Messi stated.

He also commented on the hard-fought victory over Switzerland: “I’m very happy with the win. It was a tough match. We dropped back after scoring. From that position, it was difficult for us to attack, and we were just sending long balls.”

He also posted on social media, writing: “We had to suffer again, but this team never stops believing. We are once again among the top four in the world.”
