Brandon Mechele delivered another strong performance at the World Cup, and Belgium came agonizingly close to extra time in their quarter-final clash against Spain at the 2026 World Cup, only for a late Mikel Merino goal to secure a 2-1 victory for the Iberians.

“I'm proud. Especially in the last few matches, we showed what we're capable of. It was tough for us to get through the group stage, but we gradually found our rhythm. Today was no exception, and we played a good game. We just didn't have luck on our side,” Mechele commented.

“Youri Tielemans is our captain. It's always difficult when he's not there, but we have enough quality players on the bench. Hans Vanaken did a fantastic job, as did the entire team. It's a bit disappointing that our participation had to end this way because we didn't play badly. We could have made it to extra time, and then anything would have been possible,” the defender believes.

“I don't think anyone expected me to play in every game. I gave my all and can look back on a good tournament. I am very proud and tried to be useful, just as I do at Club Brugge. I think it worked out quite well. So I am happy and proud,” Mechele shared.

“It's nice to hear that the fans are happy with me. I am happy and proud,” the Belgian international added.
