At just 19, all of France celebrated him for winning the World Cup. Three years later, however, he experienced rejection, with some crossing every line. Speaking on "The Bridge" podcast alongside Tchouaméni and Hakimi, the French superstar spoke for the first time about his experience after missing the penalty against Switzerland, which led to the "Les Bleus" being knocked out of Euro 2020.

The Real Madrid star admitted he was targeted with racist attacks to such an extent that he contacted the president of the French Football Federation to express his intention to retire from the national team.

"When I missed the penalty against Switzerland, I started receiving racist insults; they called me a 'monkey.' I went on vacation and felt like the living dead; I was in a state of shock. When I joined the national team, I immediately won the World Cup.

Very quickly, I became a national hero, and I told myself that France was doing exceptionally well. But then you receive all this at once, and it's difficult. I requested a meeting with Noël Le Graët and told him I wouldn't play again," he stated.

Meanwhile, Mbappé praised his former coach at Paris Saint-Germain, Luis Enrique, while also referring to his difficult final season at the Parisian club.

"He's an excellent coach. He truly speaks his mind. Unfortunately, I had him during the final year of my contract with Paris Saint-Germain. And that last year was like a rollercoaster."

I couldn't truly enjoy our collaboration. For the first month, I was out of the plans. When I made the decision to leave, I played very little in the league during the last four months.

I enjoyed it more as a football fan and from a tactical perspective, because I love football. However, in my situation at that time, I couldn't truly enjoy it. He is a coach who knows a lot about football," he said about the Spanish manager.
