The four-time world champion was edged out for the top spot by Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 0.179 seconds. Speaking after qualifying, the Dutch Red Bull driver insisted he had made no mistakes, explaining that things simply unravelled in Q3 after losing the balance of his car.
"Q3 just didn't come together. Everything was going well in the first two sessions, but then, for whatever reason, the car's balance just wasn't there on either set of tyres. "I didn't make any mistakes, but I just lacked grip and the car started sliding around a lot. On the final lap, it was obvious things weren't working out, especially with the tailwind in certain sections. So you try to push a bit harder, hit a bump the wrong way, the car starts hopping like a kangaroo, and you get a massive snap. At that point, you know the lap is ruined. "To be honest, I'm not happy at all with Q3. It wasn't the result I wanted, nor what I expected. But if I'm still second despite everything, I'll take it," Verstappen reflected.
