Red Bull driver Max Verstappen highlighted that managing engine cooling effectively will be crucial heading into the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix weekend.
The Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez hosts Round 19 of the Formula 1 season, posing unique challenges due to its high altitude. The thinner air makes power unit temperature management significantly tougher than at most venues, prompting teams to run additional cooling louvres on their engine covers.
The Dutchman arrives in Mexico following a fiercely contested weekend in the United States, where he still managed to secure a podium finish. He noted that there are specific areas regarding the RB22's handling that the team must scrutinize to maintain their front-running pace.
"The race in Austin was tougher than expected, but we have to take the positives from finishing on the podium. Mexico presents completely different conditions, so it's hard to make predictions. First, we need to get a better understanding of certain elements on the car, which the team is working hard on," Verstappen commented.
Chasing a record sixth victory at a single circuit
A triumph on Sunday would mark the Dutchman's third win in the last four races. It would also signify a record sixth victory at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, setting a personal best for the most wins at a single circuit. Currently, he boasts five wins in Mexico, alongside five apiece at Yas Marina and the Red Bull Ring.
"We hope to be more competitive. It is always tricky here because of the altitude and the risk of overheating, so getting the cooling right and putting the car in the optimal operating window is essential. The fans here are incredibly passionate, and we're in for an exciting race," added the four-time world champion.
