Matthäus: England World Champions? No, I'm for France

German football legend Lothar Matthäus doesn't believe England will win the 2026 World Cup. The "Three Lions" eliminated Norway last night and are set to face Argentina in the semi-finals. The former Bulgaria coach, who lifted the World Cup as captain of the German national team in 1990, shared his thoughts during the German MotoGP Grand Prix at the Sachsenring in Saxony.

The Ballon d'Or winner was asked if the trophy would "come home" – a reference to the popular refrain "It's Coming Home" from David Baddiel and Frank Skinner's song for Euro '96. However, Matthäus gave a negative response: "No, I'm backing France."
