This means that families where the job of taking care of the kids lies solely with mother, may have strained relationships as time goes on.

The team of researchers led by Daniel L. Carlson, an assistant professor of sociology at Georgia State University (GSU), analysed data obtained from 487 heterosexual couples in a 2006 Marital and Relationship Survey (MARS).

Married couples were grouped in three categories, women who did all or most of the childcare, men who did most or all of the childcare and couples who split childcare equally.

The couple's relationship quality, the rate at which they have sex and how good their sex life is were all examined.

It was gathered that at the end of the research, women and men who did all or most of the childcare duties were reported to have lower quality relationships and sex lives.

The research surprisingly revealed that men who carry out most childcare duties have normal relationships with their wives and has no negative effect on the quality of their sex lives.

This implies that it pays to invest more in the children's lives as a father.
