Austria's captain and record goalscorer, Marko Arnautović, has confirmed that the match against Spain was his last for the national team. The 37-year-old striker didn't hide his devastation following the heavy defeat but nonetheless paid tribute to the opposition and expressed pride in his country's performance.
“Congratulations to Spain. We tried, but they are an exceptional opponent. Unfortunately, it didn't work out, but we can still be proud of ourselves. For me, this was the last time. It's a disaster. I've already cried enough tears,” a deeply disappointed Arnautović shared immediately after the final whistle.
Despite the painful farewell, the veteran admitted that participating in the World Cup remains the pinnacle of his football journey.
“The biggest highlight of my entire career was playing here, at this World Cup, with my country, with Austria,” the legendary goalscorer concluded emotionally.
