Maresca Believes Bruno Fernandes Also Deserved a Red Card

Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca believes Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes also deserved a red card in the incident that saw Phil Foden sent off during yesterday's derby at Old Trafford. In the clash, the Portuguese midfielder first kicked the English international, who was on the ground, after which Foden deliberately retaliated and was dismissed. This was one of two highly contentious decisions in yesterday's encounter. The other was Erling Haaland's goal, which was allowed despite Enzo Fernandez being offside and clearly attempting to play the ball. Here, Maresca expressed the opinion that the goal was correctly awarded, but the refereeing committee later admitted that the goal should have been disallowed.

“I think Phil Foden’s red card is a red card, but I also think that in the same action, it’s a red card for Bruno Fernandes. I reviewed the situation immediately, right from the bench. And it’s a clear red card for Phil because it’s a reaction. But in the same action, you can also see Bruno’s intention. So for me, yes, it’s a red card for Phil, but it’s also a red card for Bruno,” Maresca stated regarding the incident.

When asked about City's winning goal, the Italian said: “Erling was not offside, and Enzo does not influence the situation with his action.”
