Marco Bezzecchi backs Jorge Martin in MotoGP title fight after Australian GP crash

Aprilia star Marco Bezzecchi has offered his full backing to teammate Jorge Martin following the heavy crash that sidelined the Spaniard from the Australian Grand Prix. Despite the massive blow to the Aprilia rider's championship hopes, Bezzecchi insisted the fight for the MotoGP crown is far from over.

The 2024 world champion arrived at Phillip Island holding a slim two-point lead in the standings. Martin started fourth in today's sprint and immediately engaged in a duel for victory with title rival Marc Marquez. However, on lap eight while running in second, the Spaniard suffered a heavy high-speed crash at Turn 8, sustaining a fractured wrist.

The severe injury has ruled Martin out of Sunday's race in Australia and puts his participation in next week's Malaysian Grand Prix in serious doubt. The crash hands a significant advantage to Ducati's Marc Marquez, who now holds a 10-point lead at the top of the standings with just five rounds remaining.

Despite the setback, Bezzecchi stood firmly behind his teammate and refused to count him out of the title chase.

"It's truly unfortunate for Jorge, for the team, and for everyone at Aprilia, because he was doing an incredible job. But obviously, nothing is decided yet. As we've seen time and again in this championship, anything can happen. I'm sending him a big hug."

Bezzecchi himself knows just how quickly fortunes can change on track. Earlier this season, the Italian held a lead of over 30 points, while Marquez was trailing by 102 points after the Italian Grand Prix.

Strong Sprint Comeback for Bezzecchi

Bezzecchi endured a tricky qualifying session in mixed conditions on Saturday morning, leaving him ninth on the grid. Although he dropped out of the points at the start of the sprint, he showed great pace to carve his way back up to a hard-fought fourth place.

"I'm not happy with my qualifying performance. Unfortunately, I couldn't put together a fast enough lap to start further up. It's frustrating because I was very competitive in both fully wet and completely dry conditions, but in the mixed weather, I just lacked the pace. However, I'm pleased with the sprint; I had a lot of fun out there," the rider said.

Following the Australian round, Bezzecchi sits third in the overall standings, 50 points behind leader Marquez. Should Martin face an extended spell on the sidelines, the Italian could emerge as Aprilia's sole championship contender over the final five rounds of the season.
