Manchester United Revives Interest in Long-Standing Transfer Target

Manchester United is reportedly set to rekindle their interest in Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite during next summer's transfer window. The 20-time English champions were heavily linked with the player in the summer of 2024. It's believed the Red Devils submitted at least two rejected bids for the defender before the start of the 2024-25 season, after which the Englishman signed a new contract with his club until June 2030. Due to a severe hamstring injury, the 24-year-old made only 10 appearances for Everton in the 2025-26 campaign, but he has been in strong form since the beginning of the current season.

According to former Manchester United chief scout Mick Brown, Branthwaite remains on the club's radar.

“Manchester United needs to address their defensive issues as soon as possible,” Brown told Football Insider. “When I look at Everton’s back four, for example, I see huge differences in their desire and readiness to defend compared to what I observe at Manchester United. [James] Tarkowski is excellent every week, and Branthwaite alongside him always impresses. Let's hope he stays healthy throughout the season.”

“As for Manchester United’s defense, they will be looking for new targets next year, and Branthwaite is a player who has long been at the top of their list. Obviously, he had injury problems, which were definitely concerning, but he’s returned to the Everton squad, and they will be hoping to keep him. Manchester United scouts will be watching Branthwaite closely this season because if he can return to the form he showed previously, he will certainly be an option. I don’t expect this to happen in January. They will want to observe him over an entire season, but this is a move I can see Manchester United making,” Brown added.

Branthwaite has been impressive for Everton since the start of the season, with the Englishman making four Premier League appearances for the Toffees. Everton has him under contract until 2030, but if he stays fit, given his qualities, it certainly won't be long before a move to a big club materializes. Standing at 195 cm, Branthwaite is dominant in the air, while also being quick and excellent with the ball at his feet. Manchester United reportedly sees him as an ideal long-term replacement for Harry Maguire.
