Manchester City has continued its strategy of securing key players, officially announcing a new contract agreement with Josko Gvardiol. The Croatian international has now committed his future to the Citizens until 2031, extending a deal that was set to expire at the end of this month.
This summer, the 24-year-old defender attracted significant interest from several European giants, with Real Madrid reportedly the most persistent suitor. However, Gvardiol ultimately opted to tie his future to the English champions.
Commenting on his new contract, Gvardiol stated: "As soon as I learned that City wanted to renew my contract, I immediately felt this was exactly what I wanted. The City fans have been incredible to me from day one, and the club provides absolutely everything for its players. This is the best club in the world to play for."
"Over the three years I've spent here, I've felt so much love and respect, and I don't take that for granted. This is a world-class team that is young and full of potential. I truly believe we will achieve many successes in the coming years."
Sporting Director Hugo Viana added: "Josko is a player this club truly believes in. He is young, an exceptional professional, and already one of the best defenders in the world. Manchester City is committed to retaining its top talents, which is why we are so pleased this new deal was concluded."
Gvardiol has made 122 appearances and won six trophies with City, scoring 13 goals since joining from RB Leipzig in a £77.6 million transfer in 2023.
Manchester City has also recently secured another defender, Uzbek Abdukodir Khusanov, to a long-term deal, and Belgian winger Jérémy Doku is expected to sign a new contract soon. Phil Foden has also already penned a new deal.
