Managerial Merry-Go-Round: 13 Different Bosses in the Last 13 Chelsea vs Manchester United Clashes
Chelsea and Manchester United lock horns once again in the latest chapter of their rivalry, with the two heavyweights set to field their 11th different managerial pairing on the touchline. This remarkable statistic stems from relentless dugout turnover at both clubs, leading to an extraordinary run where 13 different managers have featured across their last 13 competitive meetings.
Saturday's Premier League clash at Stamford Bridge will see Michael Carrick lead the Red Devils against Xabi Alonso's London outfit.
This cycle of hirings and firings began in October 2020, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United and Frank Lampard's Chelsea played out a 0-0 stalemate at Old Trafford.
Following Lampard's departure, Thomas Tuchel took charge of the Blues, with his first encounter against Solskjaer in London on 28 February 2021 also ending goalless. In November of that year, Carrick took interim charge of Manchester United, securing a 1-1 draw against Tuchel in the capital. On 28 April 2022, United's next interim manager, Ralf Rangnick, earned the same result against the German tactician at Old Trafford.
The following campaign brought changes in both camps. Chelsea appointed Graham Potter to replace Tuchel, while Erik ten Hag took the reins at Manchester United. Their clash on 22 October 2022 finished 1-1, before Potter was subsequently dismissed. Lampard returned as caretaker manager for the Blues until the end of the season, but suffered a heavy 4-1 defeat at the Theatre of Dreams against Ten Hag's side on 25 May 2023.
Mauricio Pochettino took over at Chelsea for the 2023-24 season. In his first encounter with the Dutchman, he fell to a 2-1 defeat at Old Trafford, but the Blues exacted revenge on 4 April 2024 in a dramatic 4-3 thriller at Stamford Bridge.
Following the end of the Ten Hag era, Ruud van Nistelrooy took temporary charge of United and drew 1-1 against new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca on 3 November 2024. Shortly afterwards, Ruben Amorim was named permanent manager of the Red Devils. The Portuguese tactician suffered a 1-0 defeat in West London in May 2025, but bounced back with a 2-1 victory on home soil in September of that year.
Amorim's tenure also proved short-lived, leading to another caretaker spell for Carrick. He guided United to a 1-0 away win against Chelsea, then managed by Liam Rosenior. Carrick was subsequently handed the permanent role and is now set to test his mettle against Xabi Alonso this weekend.
The pressure on both managers remains intense. Carrick's position is under serious scrutiny following Manchester United's worst league start in four decades. Alonso is also facing questions after winning only half of his opening eight Premier League matches and suffering three defeats.
