The former Australian prime minister was notoriously catapulted to power by a constitutional crisis that left the nation bitterly divide.

Fraser who was mistook for a classical conservative,  later became a vocal critic of conservative politics in Australia and according to AP, a thorn in the side of the centre-right Liberal Party that he once led and eventually quit in disgust in 2010 following the party's election of the current Prime Minister Tony Abbott as its leader.

Fraser came into power following the dismissal of the chaotic, frenetically reformist government of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam by Governor-General John Kerr.

The late leader then headed thecaretaker government that followed the dismissal and Fraser's conservative coalition went on to win a clear victory over Whitlam's centre-left Labor Party.
