Organisers of the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia are targeting a crowd of 100,000 spectators for the upcoming race weekend. Sales figures from yesterday revealed that 95,000 tickets have already been sold, and Sepang Circuit CEO Azhan Shafriman Hanif remains confident that attendance will reach the six-figure mark.

Reaching that milestone would approach the all-time attendance record for Formula 1 events at Sepang, which was set at the 2008 Malaysian Grand Prix with 126,960 tickets sold. Historically, races at Sepang drew between 40,000 and 50,000 fans, low turnouts that ultimately led to Formula 1 dropping Malaysia from the calendar.

Figures also indicate that half of the tickets for the upcoming weekend have been purchased by international fans, which Malaysian authorities have hailed as welcome news.

Revenue generated from ticket sales will go directly to Bahrain, which will pay a fixed fee to rent the Malaysian circuit.
