According to Italian journalist Alessandro Luigi Maggi, a new basketball club, Roma, is set to be officially unveiled in the coming days. The team will compete in Italy's top-tier basketball league, Serie A.
Legendary Serbian basketball player and coach Aleksandar "Saša" Đorđević will take the helm of the new team, marking his return to club basketball. Reports indicate that Luka Dončić, a global basketball superstar and one of the club's shareholders, was instrumental in bringing Đorđević on board.
The entire project is spearheaded by Donnie Nelson, former general manager of the Dallas Mavericks, known for his close collaboration with Dončić during the Slovenian's tenure in Texas. Nelson was a key figure in building the team that reached the 2024 NBA Finals. Alongside him, Rimantas Kaukenas will be responsible for player recruitment.
