The Portuguese men's national basketball team has commenced its training camp in Luso, Mealhada municipality, where they will remain until the 15th. This camp kicks off their preparation for the upcoming qualification window for the 2027 FIBA World Cup.
Head coach Mário Gomes is still awaiting the full squad, with Neemias Queta and Travante Williams expected to join the team shortly. However, the camp already features the presence of Rúben Prey from St. John’s University and recent arrival André Silva, both of whom are training with the rest of the called-up players.
Training sessions are currently underway between the Luso Municipal Pavilion and Anadia, marking a crucial week for Portugal's ambition to achieve its first-ever World Cup qualification. Following this training camp, the national team will travel to Turkey for two closed-door warm-up matches.
Official fixtures are next on the agenda, with Portugal set to face Spain in Zaragoza on August 28th, followed by a home game against Georgia in Matosinhos on August 31st.
Portugal enters this second qualification phase in 4th place in their group, carrying over a record of three wins and three losses from the first round. The Portuguese squad will contend with teams from Group A: Spain, Georgia, and Ukraine. Qualification extends until February 2027, with the top three teams securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
