Dončić, the NBA's leading scorer and the driving force behind the Lakers' ascent to third in the Western Conference, sustained a leg injury during Los Angeles's decisive loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Thursday. An MRI has since revealed the severity of the injury.
The Lakers (50-27) have just five games remaining before the playoffs begin, starting with a Sunday matchup in Dallas.
Second-degree hamstring strains often require several weeks for recovery, but Dončić is no stranger to such issues. He previously missed four games just before the All-Star break due to another left hamstring strain, only to return to the lineup after the hiatus.
Dončić has been putting up spectacular numbers in his first full season with the Lakers, who acquired the Slovenian superstar from the Mavericks last season. He's averaging 33.5 points, 8.3 assists, and 7.7 rebounds per game for Los Angeles. He was also named Western Conference Player of the Month for March, following a streak of 13 consecutive games with 30 or more points, including seven 40-point performances.
Lakers coach JJ Redick stated that Dončić initially injured himself in the first half against the Thunder but was cleared to return to play. Dončić lasted only about four minutes before turning, stopping, and collapsing to the court in pain, subsequently exiting the game.
