The stage is set for a new NBA season with Luka Doncic once again in the spotlight. According to leading American and Slovenian basketball insiders, the 27-year-old Los Angeles Lakers superstar enters the 2026–27 campaign in the best shape of his career since his rookie year in the league.

Following a grueling stretch of wear and tear and injuries in previous years, Luka Doncic dedicated his offseason to a complete physical reset, focusing heavily on conditioning and shedding weight.

"Luka is back to his rookie weight"

Renowned ESPN insider Tim MacMahon shared an overwhelmingly positive assessment of the Slovenian superstar's physical condition on "The Hoop Collective" podcast.

"I really think Luka is in the best shape and the leanest he's been since his rookie year. I think Luka was officially listed at 218 pounds (99 kg) in his rookie season with the Dallas Mavericks, but realistically he was probably around 230 (104 kg)—and it looks like he is right back in that range now," MacMahon revealed.

These claims align completely with reports from Slovenian outlet SportKlub.si, which tracked the final stages of his offseason preparations back home.

"His weight is in the ideal range, unofficially sitting right around 231 pounds (105 kg). It's been a long time since he looked this fit and prepared for the heaviest workloads," the outlet reported, noting that the Lakers officially listed him at 230 pounds (104 kg) last season.

From Rehab to a Mini-Camp in Slovenia

Doncic's summer regimen initially focused on recovery following a tough injury late in the 2025–26 campaign. Doncic suffered a partial grade-two tear of his left hamstring, which forced him to miss the California franchise's entire playoff run. Prior to the setback, he had dominated in 64 regular-season games, averaging 33.5 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game.

To achieve a full recovery, Doncic decided to skip his summer commitments with the Slovenian national team and spend time with his family and daughters. Still, he stayed sharp on the court—organizing a mini-camp in Slovenia for his Lakers teammates under the supervision of longtime personal strength and conditioning coach Anze Macek, who has been by his side since his days in Texas.

Fully healthy, noticeably leaner, and hungrier than ever, Doncic heads into the new season widely regarded as a frontrunner in the MVP race.
