Under the watchful eye of new French national team coach Zinedine Zidane, the favorites from Parc des Princes predictably dominated the first half. However, it was the home team that capitalized on their sole opportunity. Shortly after the half-hour mark, captain Florian Thauvin expertly closed in at the far post, converting Matthieu Udol's driven cross into the net.
Despite several chances, the Parisians couldn't equalize, marking only their second defeat in this trophy match since 2013, when they became a fixture in the clash between the cup winner and league champion. Five years ago, PSG lost to OSC Lille.
Lens became the seventh French team to complete their collection of trophies from all four domestic competitions. Their club cabinet also boasts a Ligue 1 triumph (1997/98), a Coupe de France victory (2025/26), and a League Cup trophy (1998/99).
Immense joy erupted in the home camp, shared by new head coach Dino Toppmöller, for whom this was both his competitive debut and his first major trophy. "It's truly something special. It was my first match with my team, with the fans. This is genuinely a collective victory for the entire team, for all the players. The atmosphere today greatly contributed to winning this title.
I feel incredibly proud. Before the match, we knew we'd face a challenge against a technically strong team with excellent ball possession, very dangerous in the final third. But we also knew we could achieve something, especially on counter-attacks. We played with real heart. In front of this crowd, we can beat anyone. We showed that today," Toppmöller stated for L'Equipe.
"Down to ten men for over 50 minutes, yet united from start to finish. The Blood and Gold defeated the reigning European champions to claim the club's first-ever Super Cup. Well done, gentlemen," Lens posted on social media, referencing their club colors.
Coach Luis Enrique's squad failed to build on last week's UEFA Super Cup triumph against England's Aston Villa, and to make matters worse, they lost Nuno Mendes for at least one match after he received a red card in the 87th minute.
"I think we deserved more," insisted PSG coach Luis Enrique. "But I must congratulate Lens; they won and played very well, with their usual intensity. We played a very good game, but we didn't have the luck we needed," he declared.
