Legendary German footballer Lothar Matthäus made a comment to Sky Sports that is sure to stir debate amidst the ongoing discussion for the Ballon d'Or. While he ranks Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé among the two best players in the world currently, he doesn't believe either is the top favorite for the prestigious award. For Matthäus, Harry Kane stands above all.

According to Matthäus, the English striker has amassed exceptional statistics, won the Golden Boot, scored at the World Cup, and netted crucial goals in the Champions League. He also adds to Kane's tally the titles won with Bayern Munich and reaching the semi-finals of both the Champions League and the World Cup.

The German World Cup winner acknowledged Yamal's immense talent, describing him as an “exceptional footballer.” However, Matthäus clarified that the past season wasn't truly Lamine Yamal's year. In his view, the Spanish international was “one of many” during Spain's successful World Cup campaign and didn't consistently maintain the level he demonstrated at the start of the current season.

Matthäus believes that titles carry significant weight in the voting, and in this regard, Lamine has an advantage over Mbappé. Matthäus recalled that the French forward failed to win trophies with either Real Madrid or the French national team during the period considered for the Ballon d'Or.
