The Los Angeles Lakers, one of the world's most iconic basketball franchises, have been sold for a record-breaking $12 billion. The new owners of the "Lakers" are businessmen Joshua Kushner and Bob Iger.
Kushner, 41, is the founder of the investment firm Thrive Capital. A Harvard alumnus, he is also the brother of politician Jared Kushner, who is the son-in-law of US President Donald Trump.
Iger, 75, recently served as the CEO of The Walt Disney Company and previously held the CEO position at media giant ABC.
This marks the second ownership change for the Lakers within a year. In June 2025, Mark Walter paid the Buss family $10 billion to acquire the club's shares. The Buss family owned the Lakers for 46 years, with Jerry Buss leading the club until 2013. Following his passing, his daughter Jeanie Buss took over the reins.
US media outlets described the change of ownership for the 17-time NBA champions as surprising. Kushner and Iger had been linked to establishing a team in Las Vegas, but unexpectedly submitted an offer to Walter, who opted to pocket a $2 billion profit within a year.
