At the ongoing World Cup in the USA, Mexico, and Canada, Lionel Messi is in superb form. He has already scored eight goals, having broken the historical record in just the second group stage match against Austria.
Previously, Miroslav Klose was the World Cup's top scorer with 16 goals. However, the Argentine has since increased his total tally to 21 precise strikes. The former record holder admitted he is a huge fan of Messi.
An Emotional Phone Call
"Argentina's coach, Lionel Scaloni, was my teammate at Lazio, and we are still in regular contact. He arranged a phone call between me and Messi after he equaled my World Cup scoring record. It was truly touching," said Klose, as quoted by German media.
"Of course, Messi and I met on the pitch several times, which was always great and full of respect. However, this was our first longer conversation off the field. He promised to send me a signed jersey," added the 48-year-old German, emphasizing that he considers Lionel Messi the greatest footballer of all time.
During the current tournament, the Argentine has also set several other historical records. He became the first footballer to score in nine consecutive World Cup matches, and he is also the only player to have scored against 15 different national teams and registered nine assists.
He will have his next opportunity to break further records on Saturday night into Sunday morning, when Lionel Scaloni's squad faces Switzerland in the quarter-finals.
