Guillermo Ochoa, widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in Mexican football history, has announced his retirement from professional sports, bringing an end to his illustrious 22-year career.
“I could never have imagined how far a dream could take me. Today, I can only look back with pride and say: Thank you to my family. Thank you to my teammates. Thank you to every fan who was with me every step of the way. I carry with me the love of millions and the certainty that I gave my all for Mexico. What we experienced, no one can take from us. From the bottom of my heart, thank you for everything!” Ochoa wrote on his social media channels.
At club level, Ochoa won the Clausura championship with Club América in 2005 and also lifted the Belgian Cup with Standard Liège.
On the international stage, he helped the Mexican national team secure six Gold Cup titles and earned a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. The Mexican shot-stopper is the only goalkeeper to have participated in six FIFA World Cup finals.
