Striker Marko Arnautović has announced his retirement from the Austrian national team. The 37-year-old forward made his final appearance for the squad in their World Cup Round of 16 loss to Spain in Los Angeles last night. Arnautović concludes his international career as Austria's all-time leader in caps with 137 and goals with 49, three of which came at the 2026 World Cup. He also etched his name in history as one of only four Austrian footballers, alongside Ivica Vastić, Romano Schmid, and Saša Kalajdžić, to score in both World Cup and European Championship finals.
“This was my last match in the national jersey. My games for Austria are the most significant of my career. I am happy that I had the opportunity to represent my country here at the World Cup. It saddens me that I will no longer be part of what I consider my second family, but there’s no room for more tears,” Arnautović commented. “Congratulations to Spain. We tried everything, but our opponents were exceptional. Unfortunately, things didn't go our way in this match. Nevertheless, we can be proud of what we achieved at the World Cup,” the striker added.
