LeBron James has finally broken his silence, just three days before media day, to explain his surprising move to the Philadelphia 76ers. In a conversation with two-time NBA MVP Steve Nash for the return of the "Mind the Game" podcast, the league's all-time leading scorer detailed the reasons that led him to entrust his future to the Philadelphia team.
His relationship with Tyrese Maxey was one of the crucial factors. LeBron described his connection with the young player as something that goes "beyond the court" and revealed that Maxey was one of the first people to contact him once he became a free agent and informed the Lakers he wouldn't be returning. "First and foremost, my relationship with Tyrese Maxey goes beyond the court. [...] I love everything about Tyrese Maxey. Every day, you get the same person. And that's very rare in sports and, obviously, super rare in life," James stated, praising his new teammate's consistency and character.
Another decisive element was the unexpected acquisition of Jaylen Brown, whom LeBron considered "another intriguing piece" that no one anticipated. The superstar lauded Brown's approach to the game, both offensively and defensively, and his sharp intellect.
When asked why Brown is often seen as "misunderstood," LeBron explained it's due to his individuality and how he uses his voice, sometimes in unorthodox ways. "I think anytime someone moves at their own pace, it makes others uncomfortable. He has his own voice, he moves to the beat of his own drum; that makes people uncomfortable because it's not what everyone is used to," he analyzed.
However, the most significant reason, according to LeBron himself, is the opportunity to play alongside Joel Embiid and help him achieve the only major accomplishment he's missing: an NBA championship.
"He's done everything in our league, and the only thing he hasn't done is win a championship. And I want to try to help him get his first," he declared. "He's been the MVP of our league, he has a gold medal, All-Star selections, his signature shoes, a lot of money, a beautiful family, he has everything. [...] I hope I can be that small final piece that can help him get over the hump."
During the conversation, Nash compared Maxey's attitude to Stephen Curry's for his "positivity in everything he does." LeBron agreed, emphasizing that Maxey's personality hasn't changed since he first met him at 19, even after becoming a league superstar.
With the union of James and Embiid, both NBA MVPs, and Jaylen Brown, who, like LeBron, has been a Finals MVP, the Sixers now boast extensive championship experience. James indicated that this shared background will be fundamental in leading the team to success.
