Laporta: We are keeping an eye on Fàbregas, but Flick is striking fear into Europe right now

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has revealed that the club is closely monitoring Cesc Fàbregas' managerial rise, although an immediate change in the dugout is not on the agenda. The former Spain midfielder came through the ranks at La Masia and currently has a release clause in his contract if the Blaugrana come calling. Fàbregas is enjoying a remarkable spell in charge of Como, who are set to visit Barca in the Champions League at the end of January.

"Cesc is one of our own and we are delighted with his success at Como," Laporta told Corriere dello Sport. "He fully deserves it. We cannot wait to welcome him back to the Camp Nou. Fàbregas understands Barca's mentality and philosophy better than anyone. He grew up here, and this will always be his home. Right now, though, we have a fantastic coach in Hansi Flick, and everyone can see what the team is capable of under his leadership."

Laporta expressed full confidence in the current sporting project, insisting that Barcelona are once again among the elite in European football: "We are striking fear into the football world again. The manager has proven his quality, but within the club, we keep reminding ourselves to keep our feet firmly on the ground. There is no room for complacency – we will fight for every trophy."

Laporta also confirmed their failed summer pursuit of Inter forward Lautaro Martínez. Following previous comments from sporting director Deco regarding initial discussions, the club president officially acknowledged the approach made to the Serie A champions.

"Lautaro is an incredible player, and we certainly didn't want to miss out on him. I personally called president Beppe Marotta, but he made it clear the player was not for sale," Laporta revealed.

Despite reports from Sport suggesting the Argentine striker was open to a move to Catalonia, Barcelona chose not to force the issue out of respect for the Italian giants. Laporta explained: "Inter rejected our approach. Out of respect for Marotta, whom I hold in very high esteem, we halted negotiations, and that was the end of the matter."
