Lando Norris: McLaren Paid the Price in 2026 for Championship Glory

Lando Norris has insisted that McLaren's challenging 2026 campaign should not be viewed as a failure, but rather as a calculated developmental sacrifice made in pursuit of their championship-winning success last season.

The reigning champion explained that prolonged focus on their previous car compromised preparation time for Formula 1's new technical regulations. While a mid-season resurgence yielded victories in Hungary and the Netherlands, the team struggled to maintain that peak form.

"We knew we were going to pay a price," Norris said in Mexico City. "Considering where we started from, for me it has been a huge success."

The British driver acknowledged that the team fell short of meeting all its targets. A return to the top step raised expectations, making their subsequent dip in performance harder to take as rivals continued to bring effective upgrades.

Nevertheless, Norris takes encouragement from the progress made after a tough start and the foundation being laid for next season. He also feels his own driving displays have deserved more credit than his position in the standings might suggest.

Heading into the final stretch of the season, McLaren's primary task is to understand why their development rate lagged behind the competition and use those insights to deliver a car capable of fighting at the front week in, week out. While two race wins proved the team's baseline potential, consistency remains the crucial hurdle to overcome.
