LamiPhilips stopped by the Pulse TV studio for an interview.
The soul singer, budding actress, and mother is recognized for her classy music creation, and also her role in social activism.
On the issue of Pop music vs classy music: “I think sometimes, disposable music is good. It’s just that Nigeria is still evolving, and learning that there are different genres of music. So pop music is popular music, it is popular at that time. But there are some of them that are popular and can last for years.”
On the pressure to make disposable music: “What I feel is not pressure, because I cannot be what I am not. I am happy with who I am, I love the music that I do, it inspires me. I love looking forward to my performances. I love making live music, it makes me happy. But sometimes I do feel resentment for other people like myself, who choose to do music differently, express their African culture differently, with a different sound, and get overlooked.”
On balancing her privacy: “You have to handle your personal life with a lot of wisdom. The only reason why I would put out my private life once in a while, is because in the absence of information, people come to some conclusion or make assumptions.”
