Football stars Marcos Llorente, Dani Carvajal, Thibaut Courtois, Joselu, and Alex Baena have voiced their outrage on social media following a collision between two trains in the Spanish province of Toledo. At least 64 people have been confirmed dead.
Their shared message directly targets Spain's Minister of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, Óscar Puente. The players accused him of prioritising his social media presence over his core duties and responsibilities at the ministry.
The statement was originally posted by Llorente before being shared across the other players' accounts.
"Dear Óscar Puente, isn't it time to put X aside and focus on the job we pay you to do?
When human lives are at stake, the absolute minimum expected from a transport minister is accountability, seriousness, safety, and respect.
We are fed up with politicians who seem more concerned with winning arguments on social media like 13-year-olds instead of rising to the level of their responsibilities.
X is not your job. Your job is public transport, safety, and taking responsibility when things go wrong. So far, you've done a disastrous job, but as always, you'll shift the blame onto someone else. Let the circus continue."
