La Liga president Javier Tebas has criticized Vinicius Jr., Kylian Mbappé, and Ibrahima Konaté for their handling of the shirts supporting Ceuta during Real Madrid's match against Elche on Tuesday. The trio attempted to conceal the message "We are all Caballas," the popular nickname for residents of the Spanish enclave. They were seen only partially unfolding the shirts as they entered the pitch, with the Frenchman and Brazilian even removing theirs before the official protocol.
"I think it's very bad," Tebas stated during a conference in Huesca, organized by the Association of Directors and Executives of Aragon (ADEA).
He noted that Real Madrid is a Spanish institution and the entire team's participation in such initiatives is an "institutional act, an act of the club," not a "personal act where an opinion should be expressed." As he explained, actions promoted by sports organizations are authorized by La Liga and should not depend on the opinions of players, "when they do not affect ideological issues."
"The entire team coming out with the shirt is an act of the club. The player must come out with the shirt. Because coming out with a folded shirt is like coming out without it," insisted Tebas, who rejected claims that it was a political demonstration.
In this context, he also commented on the controversy surrounding Moroccan player Ez Abde, who wore the shirt in support of Ceuta in the Villarreal-Betis match and received threats and insults because of it, describing the incident as "collateral damage."
