New York Knicks player Josh Hart has sharply criticized the escalating ticket prices for Game 3 of the NBA Finals against Victor Wembanyama's San Antonio Spurs, set to tip off this Tuesday night.
The wave of optimism sweeping through New York is dramatically impacting the cost of tickets for upcoming games at Madison Square Garden. The cheapest tickets for Games 3 and 4 of the Finals are reportedly selling for between $7,000 and $8,000, a situation that has left Hart, the Knicks' guard/forward, quite incredulous.
"I wish ticket prices weren't as crazy as they are," the player stated. "I feel like a lot of people who have been waiting for this moment for a long time, unfortunately, won't be able to get into the arena. The cheapest ticket is $7,000 or $8,000! It's ridiculous."
And the speculation surrounding Game 3 ticket prices hasn't ended. On Saturday, the most affordable ticket was priced at $9,257, but the anticipated presence of former President Donald Trump at the event reportedly caused a slight dip in demand, due to concerns about long security lines. Organizers even advised fans to arrive at least two hours early.
By Sunday, the lowest price had dropped to $6,033, while the most expensive reached $95,501. For Game 4, where the Knicks, leading the series 2-0, could clinch their first title in 53 years, prices are even higher: the cheapest ticket costs $10,787, and the most expensive soars to $109,106.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also expressed regret over the situation. "Clearly, there's a limited number of tickets for these games," he said. "It's frustrating that more people can't access the arenas, let alone at lower prices. But the market is what it is, especially with the secondary market and the value of tickets."
Compounding the issue, fans without tickets will not be able to watch the game on a giant screen outside Madison Square Garden. The New York Police Department canceled the event due to security demands related to Trump's visit. A spokesperson for the Knicks' arena confirmed that "authorization for the Game 3 viewing party, organized by Plaza33, was denied by the city's licensing service, in consultation with the NYPD." The spokesperson added: "The White House will, however, confirm that this decision has no connection to the President. We understand that NYPD Commissioner Tisch anticipates additional street closures in the vicinity of Madison Square Garden."
