Klopp had planned to personally attend the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain in East Rutherford on Sunday, where he is currently working as a television pundit. The former Borussia Dortmund and FC Liverpool manager is set to succeed Julian Nagelsmann, and there's a strong belief in Germany that he is the right man to guide the national team back to elite status.
Nagelsmann resigned after Germany's third consecutive World Cup disappointment, with his team exiting in the Round of 16 against Paraguay. Over a week ago, Klopp met in New York with Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association (DFB), and his deputy Hans-Joachim Watzke, with whom he shares a history from their time together at Dortmund.
The parties involved in the negotiations reached a preliminary agreement. Neuendorf and Watzke also met with Red Bull CEO Oliver Mintzlaff. Klopp holds a contract with Red Bull as their global head of football until 2029.
