Former German international Jürgen Klinsmann has admitted that the German national team is not in good shape and needs a fresh start. The German legend also highlighted the performance of European teams at the 2026 World Cup.
"We certainly witnessed many surprises, which is due to the increased number of participants. This format allowed teams like DR Congo, for example, or Cape Verde to step onto the big stage. However, the applause goes to the European teams – we have six in the quarterfinals. This shows the level of football on the Old Continent. We definitely saw many fantastic things, but also many debatable ones, as was the case with the match between Argentina and Egypt, where the main topic was the refereeing. But I would say we are witnessing a fantastic World Cup. The stadiums are full, people are celebrating football, enjoying themselves, and getting to know the USA, Canada, and Mexico. Everyone I spoke with shares this opinion. Of course, the issue of ticket prices is on the agenda, but overall, I think this is a great World Cup," Klinsmann shared in an interview with BNT.
According to him, fans should show understanding towards referees.
"Referees are human, and humans make mistakes. Here, these mistakes are costly and can send you home, and that's what happened to Egypt. In their case, fate simply wasn't on their side, and I completely understand their bitterness. However, I believe no one makes these mistakes intentionally. We must learn to forgive," added the World and European champion with Germany.
The former German national team coach and player believes the DFB-Team needs a complete reset.
"Everything went wrong for Germany against Paraguay (laughs). Paraguay delivered a very unpleasant surprise to Germany. The disappointment for us is truly immense, judging by German newspapers and conversations with friends. We need a total reset. We must question everything we presented. It's incredibly sad for all the German fans who crossed the ocean to support the team. This World Cup was a dismal one for Germany," Klinsmann added.
Jürgen Klopp is expected to take over as Germany's head coach.
"He is one of the greatest coaches. If that happens, it will be fantastic. He is a phenomenal coach, a coach who knows how to motivate, challenge players, and possesses a charisma that makes people listen to him. If he takes over Germany, I believe he can bring the team back to where it belongs – among the best," the German asserted.
One of football's best strikers shared his expectations for the match between Spain and Belgium.
"Belgium is certainly not an easy team to beat. They still have a hunger for success and possess exceptional players who can make a difference. We all admire Spain for the stars they have and the football they play. Both teams are very strong at this stage of the tournament and have their chances," Klinsmann opined. According to him, Norway has a real chance to win the 2026 World Cup. "I adore this team. Erling Haaland is delightful, and they never stop surprising," Klinsmann concluded.
