Kimi Antonelli on the Brink of Becoming Fifth Driver to Clinch Title in Mexico
Formula 1 is very likely to crown Andrea Kimi Antonelli as its new world champion following the Mexico City Grand Prix.
The Italian needs just two points at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez to seal the championship with four rounds to spare, which would make him only the fifth driver in history to secure the title on Mexican soil.
To date, only John Surtees (1964), Denny Hulme (1967), Graham Hill (1968), and Lewis Hamilton (2017 and 2018) have achieved the feat. Hill is the only one among them to have clinched the crown with a race win in Mexico, during an era when the 1964, 1967, and 1968 events served as season finales. In 2017 and 2018, with two races still remaining on the calendar, Hamilton wrapped up his championships by finishing ninth and fourth, respectively.
