Kari Pešić Mixes German and English Again, Asks: Where Are the Journalists? When We Win, There's Only One Here! /VIDEO/
Bayern, long out of contention for a play-in spot, now holds a 15-20 record. After their fifth loss in the last six games, Fenerbahçe remains in first place with a 23-12 record, but Olympiacos and Real Madrid could catch them if they win their games in this round, creating a tie at the top of the standings.
Svetislav Pešić, who has announced his retirement, had his "five minutes" at the press conference, noting that the journalists were "on vacation."
Where are the journalists? When we win, there's always just one here... This wasn't our best game of the season, but we held the lead the entire time, which isn't easy against an organized team that plays aggressive defense. Maybe they didn't play as they know how in the first quarter, but when they saw we had found a good rhythm, they started playing good defense. We're happy because we stuck to our game plan. We had a plan to defend Fenerbahçe's offense, and that was the main task. I think we played a good game and deserved the win. Fenerbahçe only scored 76 points. With all their players, and our excellent defense against Bolden, Horton... let's just say this is a game that can help us in our upcoming matches, especially in the Bundesliga. Svetislav Pešić
Pešić was asked a question in German, began his answer in the same language, then switched to English before the PR representative quickly guided him back to German.
So, we talked about it before the game. We discussed that this was, let's say, the last EuroLeague game of the season, and the players really wanted to give it their all. Sacrifice, fight, as I said, always a step ahead, always trying a little harder, always that extra effort, especially in transition defense and defending the fast break. When you stop those so-called easy points or points from the opponent's fast break, you build confidence, and then on offense, you can play, let's say, freely, without pressure, and so on. And then the ball moves from one player to another. We also saw how Obst played very well. He didn't force it; he just wanted... he can do it. He made some good decisions, with four assists for others. Our guards played very well on offense, and our big men, I must say, really gave their all on defense, in switching, in transition defense. You can't beat a team like that if you don't give it your all. That's for sure. Svetislav Pešić
A follow-up question was asked about the team looking completely different.
In principle, we can always look for excuses. We had two EuroLeague games before this, and that takes a bit of a toll. Not just physical, but mental strength, to motivate yourself again and again. It's not easy for us in the Bundesliga. Wherever we play, like now in Hamburg, it's the "game of the season" for our opponents. Now 12,000 spectators, tomorrow another 12,000. They don't play in small gyms, but in large arenas. The principle is: If we win – great, and if we lose – we lost to Bayern, okay, on to the next game. So, it's not easy, I have to say. As always in the Bundesliga in recent years, even in my time, after Christmas and New Year's, everyone plays much better. The clubs have found some money again because now they have to fight for the playoffs, play-out, or to avoid relegation. Then they get some new players, practically all the teams, and then of course they are much better than at the beginning of the season. That means it's not easy for us. We are now thinking about the next game at the BMW Park, we have to win that. We have to stay in first place to have a good starting position for the playoffs. I hope, when the time comes that we don't have so many games, we will be better prepared physically and mentally, more rested. Svetislav Pešić
Nenad Dimitrijević led Svetislav Pešić's squad to victory over the European champions with 22 points. Justinian Jessup added 16, Andreas Obst scored 14, and Xavier Rathan-Mayes had 11. Vladimir Lučić and Stefan Jović were not on the roster.
