Toyota matching Lancia's record for the most manufacturers' titles in the World Rally Championship (WRC) is "truly incredible," according to deputy team principal Juha Kankkunen.
The Japanese marque made history in Chile last weekend, securing their 2026 WRC manufacturers' crown. This achievement brings them level with Lancia as the most successful manufacturer in history, with both brands now boasting 10 world manufacturers' titles.
Toyota has established itself as a dominant force in the WRC, with this year's tenth title marking their sixth consecutive championship in a streak that began in 2021. The success came with two rounds remaining in the 2026 season. Prior to this, Toyota had claimed the crown in 1993, 1994, 1999, and 2018.
Toyota's GR Yaris has been the benchmark since the current Rally1 regulations cycle began in 2022, securing 56 victories in 77 rallies held to date.
Before Toyota's recent run of success, Lancia long held the record for the most manufacturers' titles with 10 crowns spanning three decades (1974-76, 1983, 1987-1992).
Kankkunen has overseen Toyota's triumphs in 2025 and 2026, and during his driving career, he helped the brand win titles in 1993 and 1994. The four-time world champion has been involved in nine successful manufacturers' title campaigns, also contributing to three of Lancia's successes.
"As you can imagine, this is a very special moment for the team – another successful defense of the FIA World Rally Championship manufacturers' title is a reflection of the hard work everyone has put in this season," Kankkunen stated.
"10 championship titles is truly incredible and something very special for me, as I've contributed both as a driver and as part of the team management. I am very proud of the team."
"It's a fantastic feeling to secure another manufacturers' championship with this team. I was involved in some of Lancia's championships as a driver, as well as some of the first titles won by Toyota, but I'm so happy to be part of this team now too."
The achievement was also acknowledged by Toyota Chairman, Akio Toyoda.
"This season, Takamoto Katsuta won two consecutive rallies in the first half of the year, and then Elfyn Evans and Seb Ogier claimed their second victories of the season," Toyoda said. "Sami Pajari even went on a streak of three consecutive wins. After their season-opening victory, Oliver Solberg and Elliott Edmondson couldn't return to the top step of the podium, and I suppose the season wasn't easy for them. That's why I'm genuinely happy that they finally managed to secure their second win of the year here in Chile."
"And thanks to this victory, the manufacturers' championship title is now secured for Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT! Congratulations to Jari-Matti Latvala, Juha Kankkunen, and every member of the team. Thank you all for your incredible efforts."
