Atletico Madrid forward Julián Álvarez was reportedly left disappointed after his initial conversation with Diego Simeone upon returning to training. According to Spanish outlet “Sport,” the dialogue between the two before today's session did not go as the Argentine striker had hoped. Journalist César Luis Merlo claims Álvarez expected more understanding from his compatriot, who had previously gone to great lengths to convince him to sign with the 'Rojiblancos.' Álvarez had hoped Simeone would comprehend his desire to leave for Barcelona and would try to persuade the club's management to facilitate his departure. Instead, 'Cholo' merely reiterated the club's stance that Atletico had no intention of selling him, stating he would rely on Álvarez and do everything possible to help him become an even better player throughout the upcoming season. Simeone reportedly showed no empathy for the player or his wishes.
“Sport” suggests that Álvarez and his entourage felt betrayed by Simeone, believing he had gone against his own conviction of only wanting fully committed players in his squad. This comes as a significant blow to the forward, who had believed the coach was the only person capable of changing the management's decision.
Despite this setback, Álvarez and his representatives will continue their efforts to force a transfer to Barcelona. Their current plan is to await the return of CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín to speak with him directly. Julián claims Marín had also promised to facilitate his transfer but then went back on his word, now insisting on keeping him at all costs. This will be their final attempt to untangle the complex situation.
