The 'Martinator' was allowed to take part in Free Practice 1 at Sepang just six days after fracturing his right wrist in a 200+ km/h crash during the Australian Sprint. Following the session, the Spaniard had to undergo further medical checks by MotoGP doctors to evaluate whether he could continue taking part in the race weekend near Kuala Lumpur.

During the practice session itself, Dr. Angel Charte was spotted several times in the Aprilia garage speaking with Martin after his runs. The rider was visibly in high spirits, and shortly after the session concluded, it was announced that he has been passed fit to continue the race weekend.

Martin set the 20th fastest time in the opening session, finishing 1.835 seconds adrift of his primary title rival Marc Marquez, who topped the timesheets. The two are separated by just 10 points in the championship standings after the world champion took the lead following his Sprint victory at Phillip Island last Saturday.
