Following a lackluster season opener for both Denver and Jokić against Oklahoma City, combined with a dismal opening three quarters that seemed destined for another defeat, frustrated home fans vented their displeasure with boos instead of support. Jokić was far from thrilled.
"I think the fans who were criticizing us shouldn't come to games anymore. The ones who truly support us know that we never give up."
How Denver turned it around against New Orleans
Bouncing back from a subpar outing by his standards against Oklahoma City, Nikola Jokić dominated with 35 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists to record his first triple-double of the season and power past the visitors.
Remarkably, he was not even the game's leading scorer, as teammate Jamal Murray erupted for 45 points.
New Orleans made a much sharper start, taking the opening quarter 38-24 and leaving Denver staring at another early-season setback. The Nuggets showed little improvement in the second quarter either, which the Pelicans also claimed 35-33.
The visitors also took the third quarter 35-32, and the game appeared out of reach until the Nuggets staged a stunning fourth-quarter rally. Jokić and Murray took complete control, spearheading a 37-18 run in the final period to miraculously force overtime.
Riding that momentum and sheer quality, Denver comfortably closed out the win in the extra five minutes against a completely shell-shocked New Orleans side.
Trey Murphy led the way for the Pelicans with 26 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Dejounte Murray added 22 points.
It is also worth noting that Nikola Jokić is now just 11 triple-doubles away from the NBA's all-time record, making it only a matter of time before he reaches the top of the historic list.
