Jokic Downs Phoenix with a Crazy Triple-Double, Then Reveals Before Dallas Trip: "Every Flight Has a Plane Problem, But No Excuses!" /VIDEO/
The Sombor native once again showcased why he's considered one of the most intelligent players in basketball history, recording another triple-double in an astonishing 17 minutes and 41 seconds on the court. This marks the fifth-fastest triple-double ever recorded in the world's premier league.
The game-winning shot was, fittingly, Nikola's.
Nikola, can you walk us through what you saw on that final possession that led to the game-winning shot?
Yeah, we ran a pick-and-roll, and I think there was some miscommunication on the switch. Jamal was in the mid-range area, he passed me the ball, I took that 'push shot' of mine, whatever it is – and it went in. We knew the ball would somehow end up with Booker. I think we did a good job. There were pump fakes, a hand in his face, whatever, but he had to work hard for that shot, and that's what we wanted. You know, he's great at creating his own shot, hitting tough, tough shots, but it was a good defensive possession.
"Everything clicked"
Tonight, you recorded your third consecutive triple-double. How did you manage to make such an impact on the game so early?
I think the flow of the game really suited me, the pace and speed. We were hitting shots, guys were getting open, I didn't have many turnovers, so everything just kind of clicked.
What do you observe from the bench when that 'small ball' lineup is on the court and you're resting?
It's definitely something we can use now and see how it works in the playoffs. They certainly need a bit more time to get used to it, to know exactly what to do, but it can be an option for us, for sure.
What has impressed you about Collin's play for these guys this year?
To be honest, he's played very well for us too. I think whenever he's played – and he hasn't played much – he's seized the opportunity. His shooting ability and the fact that he's a tough player... he's a winner, I think. It's nice to see him impacting the game.
How much do you think playing with Jamal, who can create off the dribble, has helped him deliver these kinds of performances now?
That was his game before, but it definitely helps when you see someone creating shots like that every day. Still, I think he already had that in him.
"I'm glad I can still play at this level"
You had another outstanding performance tonight. We've come to expect this from you – 23 points, 17 rebounds, and 17 assists, topped off with the game-winning shot. At this stage of your career, what does it mean to you to continue delivering these kinds of performances?
I'm just glad I can still play at this level, impact the game, and compete. That's the good thing.
When you enter a game and read the defense, you can obviously pass, score, or do a bunch of other things. What does that process of 'scanning' your opponent look like?
I think players make decisions on the court itself. You can't fully prepare. Even if you prepare, watching film of what they'll do, it won't be the same. Maybe someone will make a mistake, someone will help, maybe they'll do something completely different, because basketball is a live game. It's not always exactly as you saw it on film. You have to read and react, and you don't have much time – these are split-second decisions.
With nine games left in the season, what's your main focus for this final stretch?
As I said – to stay healthy, to play our brand of basketball, and to do the small things a bit more thoroughly and better. So, health and everyone doing their part a little better.
"Every flight, we have some issue with the plane"
A tough back-to-back became even tougher tonight due to travel issues. What will it take tomorrow against Dallas?
This happens to us all the time. It seems like every flight, we have some issue with the plane. We'll land late, but we were in this situation seven days ago too. That can't be an excuse. You just have to go out there and play.
Are you more impressed by the triple-double numbers, or are you more satisfied with assists, rebounds, or points?
- I love assists the most. My late friend told me that two assists make two players happy, but a point only makes one happy - Jokić concluded.
