It's Just Lizards in Palm Beach

The B-side of the World Cup is here in the daily column from A BOLA's special correspondent in the United States

WEST PALM BEACH — Strolling through the tree-lined streets of West Palm Beach, as the countdown to our National Team's debut continues, means a daily encounter with a peculiar neighborhood. Here, nature insists on spilling from the flowerbeds onto the asphalt. A silent invasion is evident to any reporter: it's just lizards in Palm Beach.

Let the more club-biased reader not think there's any hidden agenda in the previous sentence, or that some rival club has set up a branch near Portugal's headquarters. Not at all. This is a purely zoological observation, though the irony of the scene is too delightful to be ignored by anyone who lives and breathes our football.

These tropical reptiles have become the true masters of the domain. They come in all shapes and sizes. Some are tiny, as quick as wingers, disappearing in a flash between cracks in the pavement; others, more robust and imposing, display themselves unhurriedly under the scorching sun, striking an aristocratic pose near palm trees and residential gardens.

They are everywhere, almost always camouflaged in Florida's lush vegetation, yet they demonstrate an impressive adaptability, perfectly accustomed to peaceful coexistence with humans. They glance at us sideways, with a feline indifference, before retreating to the protective shade of their own kingdom.

In Portugal, stadium slang often uses the term with more belligerent connotations to needle one of the rivals from the "Segunda Circular." But here, on the hot asphalt of Florida, the word sheds any pejorative load and gains an almost poetic lightness.

It's impossible not to smile at the sheer proliferation of these green creatures in a state that serves as a base for the National Team. If the creature is a sign of agility and survival in extreme environments, may this omnipresence be a good omen. After all, to successfully navigate this long American route, Portugal will need all the dexterity in the world. The asphalt continues to sizzle, and amidst reptiles and palm trees, the caravan moves forward. Portugal will prevail!
