BEIRUT, May 20 (Reuters) - Islamic State fighters took control of the ancient Syrian city of Palmyra on Wednesday after fighting off pro-government forces, a group monitoring the war said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the group had seized almost all of the city. It said it was unclear what had happened to Syrian forces stationed at a military outpost on its outskirts. (Reporting by Sylvia Westall; Editing by Louise Ireland)
