Significant doubts have emerged regarding the planned launch of NBA Europe. However, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum, and the league's leadership remain committed to launching the project next year, as originally scheduled.
A league spokesperson confirmed to NBA insider Marc Stein that the NBA Europe project is still "targeting an October 2027 launch."
During my travels in recent weeks, I've heard sharp skepticism from various basketball stakeholders abroad, questioning whether the NBA will even be able to launch its new NBA Europe project next season, as Silver and Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum have long hoped. However, the league office emphatically dismissed such claims when directly questioned on Monday. (Marc Stein's report)
Accordingly, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is expected to elaborate on NBA Europe, as well as other pressing league matters, at his press conference this Tuesday.
According to Stein, Silver should anticipate questions about the growing uncertainties surrounding NBA Europe, including whether the league can still achieve its goal of 12 permanent teams or if a potential merger with the EuroLeague might be on the table.
The proposed NBA Europe league is envisioned to start with a total of 16 teams, comprising 12 permanent franchises and 4 teams that would qualify annually.
The NBA is targeting major European cities for this program, such as Paris, Berlin, Munich, Barcelona, Madrid, Milan, Rome, London, and Manchester.
