Canada's national team coach, Jesse Marsch, announced that Marseille defender Derek Cornelius could be sidelined for several months due to an injury sustained during a national team training session. The 28-year-old Canadian was transported to a Toronto hospital.
“We had a three-team game at the end of practice. It was quite competitive. Derek and Jonathan David were chasing the ball in the corner like best friends, and when Cornelius bent down to get it, his knee got stuck in the turf, which caused his hip to react, so it's a hip injury. We believe it might be what Promise David had – a torn hamstring. We're keeping our fingers crossed that it's not too serious, but it risks keeping him out for several months,” Marsch stated.
Cornelius has made 48 appearances for Canada, scoring 1 goal.
