"I won't be remembered, given how my story was..." Derrick Rose on his legacy: Kids don't know who Wilt Chamberlain is, who am I to be remembered?
When asked how he'd like to be remembered by future basketball fans, the former Chicago Bulls star offered a thought-provoking response.
"That I played hard. That I was a winner. And to be honest, given how my story unfolded, I won't be remembered. It will be the kid who truly puts in the effort, who researches my story to learn about it, because there are many players who don't know about Wilt Chamberlain, and he broke many records, won every award, and has a ton of accolades. Today's kids don't know who he is, or they don't know about Bill Russell, and he has the most championships. Who am I then to say I'll be remembered? Probably not. But I hope that for the kid who does, it won't be by chance." - Derrick Rose
Rose's rare explosiveness propelled him to the top, but brutal injuries abruptly halted his path to becoming an unforgettable superstar and a sure Hall of Famer.
Everything changed in that fateful first round of the 2012 playoffs while he was playing for Chicago. The tearing of his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) was the beginning of a nightmare from which he never fully returned to his former level. Years of surgeries and battles with injuries followed, forever stifling his immense potential.
Despite the tragic turn of events, history cannot be erased – Derrick Rose will forever be etched as the youngest MVP in NBA history.
As a three-time All-Star, a member of the All-NBA First Team, and a two-time world champion with the US national team, Rose will remain ingrained in the minds of true basketball enthusiasts as one of the most exciting and beloved players to ever grace the court.
