"I didn't know how to react..." Wembanyama's Candid Take on Bizarre NBA Finals Game 1 Incident
Despite a subpar performance, Wembanyama maintained a philosophical outlook.
"I mean, there's no reason to worry. This is a huge lesson, a great experience. I'm glad it happened. We'll make good use of it. And you know, we'll be better in the next game here," Wemby stated.
Wembanyama also shared his impressions of playing at MSG, an arena renowned for its electrifying atmosphere.
A lot changes when your team is good. I remember coming here to the Garden two years ago – they lost by 20 or more. Now they won by 20. So, that changes a lot. It's really loud.
Regarding the Fan Who Ran Onto the Court
During Game 1 of the 2026 NBA Finals, a fan rushed onto the court in an attempt to snap a selfie with Victor Wembanyama. The French superstar, for his part, was as surprised as anyone. Wembanyama likened the event to a 2024 incident when the Spurs' mascot, the Coyote, ran onto the Frost Bank Center court and caught a bat during a game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
I've never been in a situation like that. I didn't know how to react. It really surprised me, almost like that time when the bat flew onto the court.
With just over six minutes remaining in regulation, during a San Antonio possession, a fan suddenly entered the Frost Bank Center court and approached Wembanyama. He attempted to take a selfie with the Spurs star before security promptly escorted him away.
Fortunately, neither Wembanyama nor any other player was injured due to this reckless act. Play was halted, and coaches Mike Brown and Mitch Johnson agreed with the referees' suggestion for a jump ball immediately following the bizarre incident. This isn't the only time a fan has run onto the court during an NBA Finals game. In 2016, notorious YouTube prankster Vitaly Zdorovetskiy ran shirtless onto the Quicken Loans Arena court. He had "Trump Sucks" written on his chest and "LeBron for President" on his back before security tackled and arrested him.
