Sevilla's sporting director, Antonio Cordón, has publicly addressed the dismissal of Matías Almeyda, taking full responsibility for the unsuccessful appointment and setting the team's sole objective as remaining in La Liga.
“I was the one who believed most in Almeyda, and I won't shy away from the responsibility. It was a brave decision, but it didn't work out. When you make a decision and it doesn't pan out, you can't be satisfied,” the sporting director stated emphatically, emphasizing that despite the emotional cost, the change was necessary.
Cordón also extended his gratitude to Matías Almeyda and his staff for their contributions, acknowledging that they left behind a significant legacy, both professionally and personally.
The team now enters a new phase under the guidance of Luis García Plaza, whom Cordón described as an experienced coach capable of leading Sevilla out of the relegation zone.
With nine matchdays remaining in the season, the objective is non-negotiable. “There is no other goal than to secure our survival. We need to get the points we need,” he underscored clearly.
