Brighton secured a stunning 3-0 victory over reigning champions Arsenal, who had been undefeated until this match. Pascal Gross, Haralambos Kostoulas, and Chema Andres sealed the win for the Seagulls, who started with high intensity from the first whistle, preventing their opponents from controlling the game despite Arsenal's greater possession. Following the match, Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler explained that the key wasn't a complex tactical scheme, but rather winning the individual battles.
“Our approach was to focus on ourselves and win the small battles first. To win the first aerial duel, the first tackle, the first throw-in, the first corner. It sounds a bit old-fashioned, but that was truly our approach, because when you win these small battles, you get into the game and then you can create bigger chances. When you win them, the players gain confidence, belief in themselves, and start to trust each other more,” Hürzeler stated.
However, the German specialist doesn't believe the performance was perfect, despite the convincing result. “Was it a perfect match? I wouldn't say so. There are things we need to improve. Overall, the challenge for us now is to make these exceptional performances a regular occurrence,” he commented.
Hürzeler also emphasized his ambition for Brighton to be consistent against top teams, not just to record isolated impressive victories. “We have a phrase: we want to challenge the established order. That doesn't mean doing it in just one game. We need to do it even when we're not playing against these teams. We need to be consistent in our performances,” the Brighton coach added.
