Huge Honor for a Legend: Charlotte Hornets to Retire Muggsy Bogues' Jersey

Standing at just 5-foot-3 (160 cm), Muggsy Bogues is remembered as one of the shortest players in NBA history. Despite his height disadvantage, he enjoyed an outstanding 14-season career in the league, spending a full decade in Charlotte. Over his career, he also suited up for the Washington Bullets, Golden State Warriors, and Toronto Raptors.

Washington selected Bogues with the 12th overall pick in the 1987 NBA Draft, before he made the move to Charlotte after his rookie year. There, he became the backbone of the team, sharing the court with standout stars such as Alonzo Mourning, Larry Johnson, Vlade Divac, Dell Curry, and Tony Delk.

Learning that his jersey would be raised to the rafters brought the former point guard to tears, prompting an emotional message of gratitude.

"Charlotte was home for my family and me for many years, and the support I’ve received means the world to me. It’s an incredible honor to have my jersey hang alongside Bobby’s and Dell’s. A huge thank you to the ownership, the entire organization, my former teammates, coaches, and everyone who supported me along the way. I can’t wait to share that special night with all of you," said Tyrone Curtis "Muggsy" Bogues.

Following his retirement in 2001, Bogues solidified his legacy as the Hornets' all-time franchise leader in assists, steals, and minutes played. Additionally, the 1996–97 squad he helped lead still holds the franchise single-season record with 54 regular-season victories.

Prior to this decision, the Charlotte Hornets had retired No. 13 in honor of Bobby Phills, as well as Dell Curry's No. 30.
